OpenAI has introduced an "Intelligent UI" update for ChatGPT, designed to replace standard text responses with interactive, custom visual elements. The new experience is powered by the company's recent GPT-6 model, which rolls out to paid users today and to free users tomorrow. This update represents a major shift toward generative user interfaces, aiming to make the chatbot experience more dynamic for its base of over a billion users.

The interface generates bespoke, functional components tailored to specific prompts. Early demonstrations of the technology include an interactive anatomical diagram of a slug with clickable buttons for different body parts, a San Francisco apartment affordability calculator featuring adjustable sliders for income and expenses, and an airplane seat explorer that compares cabin layouts across four different Delta and Alaska Airlines planes. Users can interact directly with these elements, tapping on specific seats to reveal flight details or adjusting parameters in real time.

To prevent the interface from becoming overwhelming, the system does not inject graphics into every response. Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, noted that their design team focused on determining when visual elements add value versus when they start to feel "cluttered." If users prefer traditional text-based answers, they can explicitly instruct ChatGPT to generate fewer visual outputs.

For developers and designers, this shift toward generative UI—similar to Google's recent search interface experiments—signals a profound change in software development. As AI systems gain the ability to instantly generate custom, personalized software interfaces on the fly, the traditional role of the UI designer may face an identity crisis. Practitioners must adapt to a paradigm where software layouts are dynamically generated for individual users rather than hardcoded in advance.
