Stanford Study Finds AI Cuts Entry-Level Jobs by 19 Percent

A newly updated Stanford University study reveals that AI adoption is disproportionately reducing entry-level hiring for young workers, threatening to close the career on-ramp for graduates.

An updated August 2026 paper from Stanford University economists reveals that artificial intelligence is significantly reducing employment opportunities for younger workers. According to the study, titled "Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts about the Recent Employment Effects of Artificial Intelligence," employment for workers aged 22 to 25 in highly AI-exposed roles is now 19 percent lower than their peers in less-exposed fields. This gap has widened from the 13 percent difference recorded last year. Since 2022, employment for this younger demographic has dropped by about 11 percent in the top 40 percent of AI-impacted jobs, while growing by 10 percent in the remaining 60 percent of less-affected occupations.

To analyze these trends, researchers utilized anonymized payroll data from HR management firm ADP. They evaluated AI exposure using the Anthropic Economic Index, which tracks how workers utilize the Claude model, alongside a similar occupational Gemini usage report released by Google. The researchers found that the decline in entry-level employment stems primarily from reduced hiring rates rather than layoffs or resignations. Furthermore, the impact is heavily concentrated in roles where AI acts as an "automative" replacement—such as accountants, auditors, receptionists, and information clerks—rather than "augmentative" positions like chief executives or registered nurses.

The study also highlights a shift away from roles reliant on "codified" knowledge, which is easily taught through textbooks, toward those requiring "tacit" knowledge gained through hands-on experience. For AI practitioners and industry leaders, these findings suggest a profound shift in talent acquisition. While senior professionals remain largely unaffected, the traditional pipeline for developing new talent is shrinking. Lead researcher Erik Brynjolfsson warned that the industry risks "quietly closing the on-ramp" for new graduates, meaning organizations must actively redesign entry-level roles to focus on human-in-the-loop collaboration and mentorship rather than tasks that can be fully automated.
